Burning Furniture

New age, new traditions;
At the sounding of the new year’s bell I recognize
that the old family is dying off,
Like hornet’s with their stingers gone,
buzzing and moaning without recourse,
So I burn the old furniture.
The old pieces of four lives without meaning,
Grandmother’s dresser, uncle’s desk,
aunt’s favorite kitchen chair, another aunt’s mirror,
Consumed by fire new,
I was tired of the wood suffering from its owners,
from dry rot, being unwanted and unrecognizable,
I cremated the furniture.
