Astonishing Ants

Richard K. Williams

It’s Spring and the ants are back
little black segmented BB bodies
crawling around my house.

I am amazed by these perennial visitors.
Because they appear magically on surfaces
always in the center, never at the edge.

I can scan the walls and floor
studying their stark white smoothness
declare them devoid of pests.
Then blink my eyes or scarcely
turn my head a second, and
an ant or ants will appear.

In the middle of a wall or the middle of the floor
motionless, antenna slowly scanning back and forth.
I cannot fathom how it suddenly got there.
The only reasonable explanation is,
ants got transporters!

They are beamed into my house
from some futuristic ant farm
orbiting the earth in outer space.
They materialize in search of
other advanced forms of life.
And I squish them with a tissue,
sometimes six at a time.
