Richard K. Williams

The best way to remember
the reasons you left
is to return.

That place you thought
would not exist
without your presence.

Has moved along, like you
regretless. Imperceptibly
perhaps, better than before.

Don’t be surprised
when you realize
how small everything is.

Or how vast the
demographic shift.

And try not to linger
sadly, on those people
left behind, lost forever.

For too much time
spent in the past is
as wasteful as

obsessive anticipation
of the future.
You tend to lose the present
which is where your life exists.

And that place you once
called home is just a half
forgotten dream.
