Knocking On A Door

The street is dirty, slushy with mud,
this road is always the same
no matter how much the city spends.

Too many cars, too many buses
too many who don’t care
where they drive.

A cat crouches, tensed under
a low evergreen, staring
at a birdfeeder.
Watching carefully, tail held high,
a dog growls at the outrage
of the deceit.
Birds dart to the feeder,
wary of seed and ambush.

Someone is singing,
a song almost heard
    but still remembered
Been a long time since
that tune was played.
Wonder why now?

Christ falls from the cross
to fix the road,
stops to watch the animals at play,
then hears the music.
Damn, I’ve heard that before,
nailing himself
to the timbers, again.

In the pausing of it all,
solitaire is played
on a computer.
Eighteen percent has been won.
Someone is cheating.

The house is lit with
an outside yellow glow,
the door was painted not long ago.
Don’t know who will answer
    this knock.
Hope it is someone not minding
living on a street
with a cross in the road.
