Everything born dies, so why do I cry?
Yet, emotion overtakes reason
since mentor/best friend won’t be here

to propel little engine when she’s down
or cheer her above piercing fears.
Even long strong life is short when you die.

Father is where Mother will appear:
in realm of enchantment and mystery;
soon, she’ll be angel for all seasons.

She’ll never have to answer quests of Why!
She’ll butterfly or roam as deer.
But, we’ll be left with what was homespun.

Maybe her ghost will assuage tears,
offer new bucolic path to please
as a waterfall creases endless sighs.

Still, I was first daughter, first one
to know distant mother longer than wide.
Besides, together we spied bear!
