Blood-Lines Scarred

Rochelle Lynn Holt

When you have to put your mother in home
that isn’t yours or hers but stranger
cell of group solitude, a curse,

(which never can be blessing of care),
you weep; for, nothing is worse
than five distant siblings turned to stone

like blood lines severed without force.
What should be done out of respect is gone,
promises broken by caregiver

after he and charge became numb in dome.
Brother with bent back is not nurse;
first sister has spent and done her share:

airline miles filling empty purse.
Even sister with challenge stirred
aid for Mom, paid with weaker bones.

Yet, second brother and youngest daughter
remain silent, estranged statues in loam,
who may return to gawk at hearse.

Two out of five recall childhood as home—
for others, pleasant poem is stranger
cell of group solitude, a curse.

Of course, people pass in institutions.
You don’t think parents die in group home.
