Brave Woman

Rochelle Lynn Holt

How do I love you, my dear, sweet Mother?
Let me count the ways in memories:
first little high chair on island—

South Manitou, Lake Michigan breeze.
You dealt this gypsy traveling hand.
You taught me to think & never smother.

A doer with motto, “I can!”
you painted, wrote, read, cooked, cleaned: no bother.
Sharp mind, humor, couldn’t be appeased.

You advised, Become writer & teacher
so I’d not be ostrich in sand.
In the garden, you outwitted bees.

You would crochet, knit and wave fan;
became caregiver on thin trapeze
(when Dad turned into very ill Father.)

You dangled and used assorted keys
with your own health precarious as feather.
You stayed when you wanted to run.

How do I love you, my dear, sweet Mother?
Let me count the ways in memories’
solo flight back for brave woman.
