Broken Tree

Rochelle Lynn Holt

Evening star, sliver moon, “I did not die,”
she wrote in her own brief eulogy
twenty-nine years before she passed,

oblivious of her destiny
due to first son left her aghast
since she never imagined he would lie.

Relocation happening fast
from hospices to group homes made her cry;
Why couldn’t she stay in her home, free?

From bedsore to wound, Mom suffered pain, sighed.
POA never kept promise.
Ten places—each she wanted to flee.

In Thunderbird hospice at last,
she knew she would never again see
birds pecking at bread or clouds in the sky.

Her body/spirit was broken tree;
but his invalid would be butterfly.
Family recalls more than son’s sass.

Evening star, sliver moon, “I did not die,”
she wrote in her own brief eulogy
twenty-nine years before she passed.
