Cruel September

Rochelle Lynn Holt

80 years done in cruel September sun,
but Mother still has dreams, is making plans
for summer cabin on Oregon coast
where she’ll sew patchwork she has in mind.

Not smoke or drink is her vice but turtles–
milk chocolate concoctions filled with nuts
after morning floor stretch for arthritis.
For breakfast she drinks decaffeinated tea.

She rests her eyes every afternoon
before Judge Joe Brown and Judge Judy.
“People have so many problems,” she says
as I recall her own life of struggle.

She bought her house with wing and a prayer,
saving pennies from Raisin Commission*
when Dad’s illness made her the breadwinner
with three out of five children waiting to grow.

One morning, there was nothing to arouse her–
not the voice of the washing machine or
sound of firstborn cleaning bedroom next door;
not even the ringing telephone.

I peeked into her room several times
between 8 a.m. and Sylvia Browne,
hoping to hear soothing rhythm of snore;
there was no movement on brother’s monitor.

Finally, I tiptoed past walker to her side,
put my hand softly on motionless chest.
“Mom, it’s time to...” I could barely whisper.
She opened her eyes. “I’m not ready yet.”
