First Fawn

When you love someone, that love never leaves,
even if or after person’s gone:
sunrise before dusky twilight;

or memory of forest with first fawn.
You see their image despite sight
like dolphins in the water interweave

dives, splashing waves in between light.
You forget flaws, quarrels or any peeves,
remembering fireflies on lawn.

You recall supper, Scrabble* on long eves;
snow falling like lace, delicate
and as quiet as dream before dawn.

You hear echo of voice at night
before noticing constellation;
realize present of peace after grief.

Now, cloak of darkness with stars is strewn
like banner, streaming from a small plane’s eaves;
in abyss something’s shining bright.
