When you are first-born, there is jealousy
unless you were adopted before
full-blood siblings came into world.

In former case, brothers, sisters abhor
places you and parents have whirled,
not to mention life and home they envy.

In latter case, abuse is hurled
by all for child’s illegitimacy.
Still, first-borns learn to be strong at core.

Watching over others, they’re not greedy
with ambition as dreams unfurl.
They never ask; they never ask for more!

Quickly, they leave state of boy, girl.
They are not defeated by closed doors.
They don’t comprehend feuding or ennui.

They know no one is island, for sure;
they realize time is a short soiree
and that not all oysters have pearls.

When you are first-born, there is jealousy,
whether adopted or full-blood torn;
both ache and bliss exist in world.
