Forty Years Old

This house is desert on the West side
when Valley of the Sun bloomed orange
and lemon trees clean as the cotton fields
in air fit for breathing by fearless and young!
Then, you could trace humps of camels in mountains,
count stars like shiny silver buckles,
glinting on endless black silk blanket
before night became soot of day forever
with brown noose choking palms,
strangulating riders still foolish enough to cross moon.

Now, the broken and bruised are confined in cage
surrounded by stone angels with cracked wings.
Some visitor feeds the hungry birds
who flock to cement fence.
But, the wounded inhabitants buried inside moldy nest
barely flutter eyelids to glimpse
antics of their former free friends.
To venture out into smoldering haze
is too dangerous and too much trouble;
besides, they never purchased requisite flight masks.

Instead, the robed ones remain limp,
popping outdated pills and vitamins
from a stockpile that serves as poor nutrition.
Waiting for Godot whispers from the eaves
of the drooping dwelling whose roof has lost
too many shingles like discarded armor.

To sleep forever echoes across the pool
filled with algae and dead crows.
Homeless garbage pickers sleep
in big empty dumpsters in the alley behind house
and are vigilant like wild cats.
