Worst part of growing older isn’t death
or disease but losing illusions
like pleasant rose-colored daydreams,

far-removed from war, politicians
who believe in grandiose schemes:
revenge, military funerals, wreaths.

For everything is what it seems,
surprises remaining for gamblers’ bets;
crimes of passion or murder don’t stun.

Some are skeptical of psychics or Seth
but not ingredients in cream;
American right to own firearms?

Young without fear, you swim in stream,
disbelieve there are people to shun
since you can’t even define the word Lethe.

But, when you’ve seen a cockroach on bun,
been scarred by lies, theft from spiders in web,
you don’t even bend to blaspheme.

Worst part of growing older isn’t death
