suffering with shingles across breast, back.
I can only offer white cloth

to great sting, shades of midnight black.
“I want to give up like a moth,”
she says between tears. “I want to be dead.”

How to assuage someone so caught
in dismal respite room on metal bed!
“Why am I being tortured on rack?”

Her two sons, brief visitors, have fled;
They tender nothing parent sought.
Soon, they’ll ship her to group home in sack.

They instigate war and have fought
to keep away sisters’ caring knack,
especially oldest who makes them see red.

Jealous buddies keep ledger off track,
forgetting all years our Mother has bled.
They’re egoists filled with hauteur.
