Hole in Back

Gross bedsore has shot down an invalid;
from size of pea to half a grapefruit,
there’s bullet hole in Mother’s back.

Who could have predicted this in youth
when she stretched Energy on rack
between home, family, desk jobs after crib?

Her vitality never slacked
from reading, crocheting, painting to rid
own depression: unspoken, uncouth.

First generation Polish/Russian kid
grew up in Depression with sacks
filled with rationed food but little meat.

She raised five children with a knack,
was caregiver to husband to boot,
whose mental illness surfaced under grid.

For years, clerical worker saved loot
so she/husband could buy a place to hide.
She was artist/woman with tact.

Now, gross bedsore has shot down invalid
in group home where POA son put
immobile Mother with hole in back.
