I caught mother reflecting in rocker
in front of living room drapes half-open
to the neighborhood reminds her of when
she was young in afternoon without blur...

Now, her gray head tilts back as glasses fall
down onto nose when weary brown eyes close.
Soon, she’ll be eighty-three; we know we’ll lose...
There’s a look on sad face that seems to call.

Is she remembering everyone who’s gone?
Or, praying for courage to be stalwart
while she sleeps more to wake just to go on—
solitary queen in a vanished court.

She wears pajamas and Dad’s robe all day,
this last matriarch who has lost her way.
