You help your mother into bed like child,
tuck comforter around small body
then plug in the sound monitor
as you listen to what you can’t see;
but, already her snore is purr
while you recall past in memories gone wild.
Surely, she was awake for stir
of young limbs before ache to be free;
no doubt, she was patient, kind and mild.
Role reversal is cycle must be
like returning child to sift/sort through files
unless parents remain intruders?
I choose to remember when each beguiled
as hero who was strong teacher,
rooted to scattered branches of tree.
That’s why shiny apple endures
like visionary Isis of the Nile
or image in my imperfect eye
same as mother I don’t berate or chide,
because I know I also will die.
Thus, I extend love back to her.
