These too are the precious, special days, nights
when your aged Mother needs tender care:
hands-on shampoo, shower as bath.

You fly to the desert to be there
several times a year without wrath
to relieve caregiver brother as light

in the darkness of aftermath:
widow who barely stands with weakened sight.
She eats very little, often stares.

But, there are moments when her face is bright,
recalling past meanders path
that turned girl into woman on dare.

I remember young, curious cat,
who made life seem like a thrilling fair;
she taught us how to cope and endure strife.

Moments shared in Mom’s twilight are rare.
She is brave warrior in this last fight;
numbers remain symbols in math.
