80 is less than twenty years away
from my own inevitable passing,
but my pages will never match her book–
Mother who delivered more into world:
five other lives inspired by rare art

created paradise from paradox,
painting craft sailed naturally through landscape
with humor and wit survived sinking swamp
from South side of Chicago to Phoenix
beyond one project to home in desert.

More roles than tentacles of octopus
she knew how to play while winning the bread;
finding minutes to sew precious dresses
in between Scrabble* and reading sagas
to crochet a rainbow philosophy

more durable than suffering, pity, pain
of walking wounded husband and children,
oblivious to her great sacrifice
as a self-educated wise woman
who taught quietly by example.

I will never attain such patience or
master such unwavering perseverance
sees trial, tribulation in proportion,
while knitting a cozy quilt under clouds.
I am lowly first daughter of a Queen.
