Lighting Candle with Small Wick

Rochelle Lynn Holt

Care-giving: underappreciated
art, skill, craft, requiring patience,
like a bus driver in traffic.

One also needs strength, sleep, common sense
when elderly is fragile stick
who won’t make choices, wants to stay in bed.

Sometimes, person is old and sick
but still has thinking mind and isn’t dead;
it’s just body can’t climb over fence.

In other cultures, they’re venerated;
sharing tasks is an easy trick
even in tribal forest or tent.

Here, we have nursing homes to pick;
so, why aren’t final prize years moments
which all members of family ought partake?

Ancient ones, though weak, are wise, not dense;
national treasures should be celebrated,
not mistreated, stolen from, kicked.

Care-giving: underappreciated
art, skill, craft, requiring patience,
like lighting candle with small wick.
