Like a Bleeding Star

Five times a year she returned to desert
like a bleeding star hopes to heal wound
not her own in valley of death

she had flown from, leaving brittle bones
buried in sand under Apache skin,
because mirage was never wet.

She crossed long miles of sky to assuage hurt,
carrying olive branch, peace wreath,
like a faithful goose or crazy loon.

No bright dreams could divert Leda
from muddy path of infernal swoon
as she settled into her narrow berth.

Daughter was either late or too soon
for the rising fire or sunset
though she kept sweeping broken rocks off earth.

Hummingbirds dart but do not fret.
She tried to remain luminous and pert,
pouring honey into patient’s spoon.

Yet, every visit seemed to tarnish worth
of same journey at time of full moon
where Phoenix revels in its death.
