Like a Hawk

Mother asks, “Can I live with you and Bill?”
In a minute! I don’t hesitate
but don’t have power of attorney.

We live faraway, two separate states.
My hands are tied, as well my knees.
I tell her to get stronger to travel.

Mother is old, has shingles and is ill.
To group home was her sons’ decree
after hospice they hoped would seal fate.

Both treat Mom as though she’s unfree.
They’ve buried her alive, second-rate,
after verbal abuse which didn’t kill.

She’s 82; caretaker has had fill!
She may rise to surprise envy,
take back her own home before it’s too late.

Softly, she stares, doesn’t berate.
But, one day soon, she will surmount the hill.
Like a hawk, she knows what she sees.

Mother asks, “Can I live with you and Bill?
