Like Dusk Fog

Rochelle Lynn Holt

When your mother is dying, so are you,
past slipping away like a dusk fog
as you grasp for frayed threads: childhood

while she drifts out to sea like a log;
You try to swim to distant wood
to bring her back to shore, away from rue.

If you’re Wolf, not Red Riding Hood,
she sees land as suffering, not peace of blue,
and whole country as just swampy bog.

So, maybe best thing is to let her go
as you did with old neighborhood
where butterflies don’t flit above frogs.

You hope to do what’s best, what’s good;
but, there’s no more motion to turn cog.
Active woman is ghost can’t even boo!

Once, we were big family with varied dogs;
our loving parents like twin pigeons cooed.
Now, we’re brittle branches who feud.

When your mother is dying, so are you,
past slipping away like dusk fog
as you grasp for frayed threads: childhood.
