Like Slow Guitar

As our Mother lay dying in group home,
stray white Cheshire cat kept meowing
while the rain fell like slow guitar.

In the darkness I heard bellowing
from a wounded creature so far
away from stream of puddles filled with bones:

bleeding memories, broken stars.
I thought I heard echo of a Poe poem,
but it was only a dog growling.

Though body was weary, I longed to roam,
to remove comatose by car;
instead, I stared at the storm pounding.

Here or there, we’re all behind bars,
I thought, as wind kept meandering.
I prayed for mother’s mother to come.

Done is the time of all balancing!
Some guide should help Mom cross into bright dome
to end this mortal suffering.
