Mother tilts, wounded bird with broken wing,
while I bend over to kiss bruised cheek
as though I could heal eagle’s pain.

We leave cage in hospital to seek
answers in desert without rain,
knowing doctor or pill offer nothing

to help her stand or fly with cane.
Endangered species with silent beak
will never rise like a phoenix or sing

when she can’t recall the day in week
or pick up telephone on the ninth ring.
Magic to revive is in vain

when 81^st birthday is approaching
and tired woman has lost her mane.
We wander through house, hoping for peek

of strong parent who kept us sane:
The Daily Show whose wit, irony, bring
humor to democrats who descry meek.

For years our wise mentor has been rare Ming
and satori in Zen beyond seek;
after sun we listen to rain.
