Lost Hummingbird

After the flood, river began to fall.
Memories of damage would never leave.
Our Mother’s house had been destroyed.

Not even mourning doves peck at eaves.
Hummingbird is lost like a toy.
Over the brackish green pool hangs a pall

like clothes thrown away by a boy,
along with albums empty of past call.
He’s stolen everything like a thief.

He’s pushed his mother into home like doll.
He said he was too weak to guide
from morning through afternoon to eve.

She said she trusted him; he lied.
Still, it was his promise she believed.
But, ghost will haunt him from Funny Face hall.

At dusk, wind howls through trees; sisters grieve.
He tries in vain to climb over brick wall.
He has nightmares of pain, no joy.
