Magnifying Glass

Rochelle Lynn Holt

You cannot live anyone else’s life—
not brother, sister, father, mother,
even though you intend to guide.

Visits might make days somewhat better
or become rollercoaster ride
seen only as contributing to strife.

Sometimes, family should run or hide
from magnifying glass or the sharp knife,
especially around a caretaker.

Nothing said or done makes you less a thief
like advice offered a new bride.
(I’d be defensive too if smothered!)

Views are different on other side
of youth when you want to help others
with health and social problems that are rife.

What you suggest is seen as tether.
After all, do any of us have sight
with borrowed camera focused wide?

You cannot live anyone else’s life—
not father, mother, sister, brother,
even though you intend to guide.
