My First Love

Mother was my first friend on the island
where Dad ran lighthouse after the war.
She fed me outside in high chair.

To this day I opt for nature more
than any home I prefer bare
with orange, blue, green colored walls to match land.

She was my mentor taught me to dare—
to jump rope, skate, dance and swim beyond sand.
She told me wish for star in hair.

She showed me that beauty doesn’t court vain;
to radiate core anywhere.
She was my first love before flowers.

To be wise, one must be kind, care.
Her life was filled with children and chores,
but she was artist with nimble hands.

She would have been teacher never bores,
for her humor/wit defined Understand.
She was adventurous and fair.

Without her, I feel orphaned on island,
but I have million memories to hoard.
Unconditional love is rare.
