Concluding spiritual ceremony
made personal by Navajo son,
preceding eulogies by friends,

I focused on beautiful woman
in rose poplar casket at end
of meaningful life at age eighty-three.

Now, there was no Mother to tend;
no soft voice to hear; gentle face to see.
I kissed her forehead and held her hands

ribboned with green-blue crystal rosary
to illuminate pink blouse sheen.
There was no one else; we were alone

as I reflected on past, then
lightly kissed lids of sleeping shaman.
I whispered I would miss her, be lonely.

Her eyelids fluttered, did not open.
I knew she would be at my side always
so I dried tears and hoped to mend.

At close of casket I saw she was free.
She was with parents, siblings, husband.
I know again there is no end.
