Wearing a neck brace, back harness and knee strap,
our battered straw woman can barely stand
to push jingle bell walker past the jungle.
She’s Norman Rockwell sketch for Aged Mother.

I spray and fluff tattered hairdo
until Nellie can wash/set for another month
even though eighty two year old train
has no speed, running on empty
without a whistle.

She prays nightly to be released from tunnel
of too many miles travailed after the wreck
when she gave up control to ghost engineer.

In House of Darkness, she hums quiet breath,
reads only Sunday comics with bleary vision,
wondering when Judge Joe Brown or Judy
will sentence her to permanent confinement

beyond prison of wounded shrapnel on earth
before body peels away flesh
to bones siren brand-new locomotive:

Silver Streak creasing shiny rails forked back
to city of lost dreams near a cool lake
or a whooshing ocean.
