Old School

Rochelle Lynn Holt

All days are holy as I relish time
spent with frail but still humorous mother,
watching Judge Joe Brown deal with petty crime
or antics of sit-down comic brother.

On Martha, cranberries bounce from dry bog;
then 6 A.M. in dark, two siblings walk:
shadows discussing politics in fog
before return to house to listen like hawks

for tinkling bell signals woman awake.
We run to her side to help her from bed
like divers rescuing anchor in lake
as she recites a dream from groggy head.

She takes a pill before I brush thin hair
then tie Father’s red robe around thin waist.
These are rare moments when I fly to care,
preparing bagel and boiled egg to taste.

In between her naps, I stare at blue pool.
I was lucky to be born to parents
who taught honor and respect from old school—
common love coupled with uncommon sense.
