Passage of Time

i.

One dawn I saw a white anchor floating,
not in reflection of upside down sky
but directly above pre-morning view
as though our Father had appeared through clouds.

Coast Guard tattoo low on forearm was high,
sailing in shape of cumulus askew
while I stared at huge mystifying sign,
freely adrift like ethereal shroud.

Flickering behind symbol his sea-blue eyes
startled me to wake even before cows
who used to wander fields sprinkled with dew
across street on land destroyed by building.

Everything old is transformed into new,
yet reason fails answer due question Why?
When past is gone, perhaps ghosts rise to sing
in distinct memories but not in a crowd.

Sometimes it’s quiet vision, nothing loud,
when lost image returns in a found song,
nudging a daughter to smile, laugh or cry
as she recalls years of bright and pale hue.

But, Sunday afternoon when rain is proud,
cardinals, nonetheless, continue to fly
from bush to roof to tree—cooing, coupling,
because sun’s still hiding in sky half-blue.

There’s no jagged lightning or far rumbling
with certain stillness before storm brings rue
when giant palms sway toward saplings that brood
burgeoning limbs will snap-crackle then die.

Yet, brown rabbit in grass hasn’t a clue
of how weather affects a human mood
or whether reality is green lie.
I wonder if the vultures are feeding

on the dead squirrel at edge of road. Oh my!
Swans mate once for life, but are they grieving
when feathers float regally in pond so cool
and quietly aloof; is it all show?

I know I wake, walk into believing
like a dream become promise after vow
for pantheistic catcher in the rye
marks mask is passage of time in this shoe.
