Respite Care

I can’t tell if she’s living or dying
when I call Mother in respite care
in Serenity House Hospice.

She sounds drugged and her voice barely there
unlike woman I visited
only some days ago before flying.

She speaks with one syllable lisp;
I sense she’s soporific and struggling
to survive attendant “torturers,”

her word, not mine, as I hear her smiling!
Is change of POA your wish?
I ask, wondering while brown eyes stare.

After silence, she answers, Yes.
My mother is strong, a tough old bear.
Now, she’s having difficulty breathing.

Show your sons and daughters who’s boss. Stay here!
I urge, trying not to break down, crying.
No loving parent deserves this.
