Reversing Roles

When the walking wounded help the infirm
(i.e. bipolar aiding elder),
ironic humor/tears prevail.

One weeps, holding on/lifting other
like weak wind barely supports sail:
roles reverse for captain at end of term.

Shrunk to child-size, Mom’s weak/frail,
can barely walk until you lift small arm;
eyes refrain from crying on shoulder.

Manic-depressive is squirrelly like worm;
82 year old isn’t hale.
Once, you were child; now you’re the mother.

Sometimes, you both silently wail,
but you care-give/pray while two endure.
As you were protected, you spare her harm.

You give relief from desert summer
in Bolingbrook* weather, below the norm,
to ancient wise woman so pale.

But, when walking wounded help the infirm,
(i.e. bipolar aiding elder),
ironic humor/tears prevail
