Sharing the Tomb

My heart is a broken tooth, a black eye
in showers that become heavy rainfall.
We’re separated by miles and the sky
which is October’s dirty blanket, pall.

Caged caretaker keeps putting you to sleep,
insists that you have start of dementia.
Mired in medication, you drown in deep
fog might be lifted in Florida.

Instead, the desert is your dry death bed.
But, Mother, when I’m at your side, you wake.
You put away Dad’s tattered robe, wear red
to rise in the sun, unlike dormant snake.

Like silent prisoner, no one talks to you.
Doorbell is only rung by mailwoman.
You’ve no friends, no family to lift the blue
mood that clings to you like a dark omen.

I’ve seen you smile, heard you speak lucidly.
I know difference: confusion or despair.
You can’t walk, not just because of pained knees;
depression paralyzes you to stare.

I am first daughter of your burdened womb.
I am grieving, because I share your tomb.
