Still Seeing Red

Nothing so consoles as Mother’s strong voice
when you have been told she’s on Death’s bed.
Bladder infection, not cancer!

You’re relieved she’s still hull, seeing red.
Others wish her six feet under.
You’re glad she came to visit and rejoice

that she’s still paid caretaker’s bother;
She can yet ring her bell and make some noise
at 82 after all’s done, said.

Despite what siblings speak, Mother is poise,
dignity, grace under pressure.
She’ll leave earth when ready to be dead.

Brother chose to be caregiver.
Though his charge is weak, she won’t be led.
Besides, she holds pen that signs each invoice.

If she lived with you, there’d be no dread;
but, she prefers her home, familiar toys.
Yes, you’re glad she still can murmur.
