In long good-bye, the half dead are dreaming
of other lives before or after
nightmare of present, no gift.

Gone is smile and echo of laughter
for the frail body spends each day sleeping
when wings won’t flutter lost spirit.

If there’s no pleasure in bird-watching
as sparrows and woodpecker drift
from branch to earth to peck, gather,

what purpose in imagining If
when you’re 82 year old mother
is too weak for walking/standing?

In pjs and robe, she’s a prisoner
with only memories to sift
from bed to sofa while barely breathing.

Thin limbs are too heavy to lift
since she’s given up reasons for being
with ailing son, impatient taker.

When death isn’t horror, only living,
you pray for relief in hereafter;
for the long good-bye is no gift.
