To Live Untethered

Rochelle Lynn Holt

They think because you are not there, you don’t
feel the agony of your Mother,
immobile in hospital bed.

You recognize years of caretaker
before he feared himself half dead,
unable to aid his charge after won’t.

He promised she’d not know Instead.
Now, ghost just might return to him to haunt.
He was fair son, deceptive brother.

But, if Mom whined/complained, he also moaned;
yet, he had free shelter, was fed.
Still, he wanted to live untethered.

In childhood, what if Mother fled?
What if she chose to escape Others?
Would we visit Funny Faces or phone?

Would we be different without bother?
Mother, age 83, never said can’t.
I bleed and blush while seeing red.

They think because you are not there, you don’t
feel the agony of your mother,
immobile in hospital bed.
