Unconditionally

Rochelle Lynn Holt

Every time the phone rings, she holds her breath,
prays there’s no bad news about Mother;
she knows it’s foolish to worry,

that everyone dies, sooner, later.
Still, she is preoccupied
with river can’t be controlled known as Lethe.

Ringing should not cause agony;
but, she can’t erase pictures of rose wreath.
She’s lost so many friends and Father.

After life is inevitable Death.
She knows she shouldn’t feel sorry;
but, soul mate Mother is her other,

better half: triumph, victory;
like swan wings touch, she shares feathers.
She’ll miss her, wandering beyond in the heath.

How can one separate cat from purr;
or, dolphin most content in sea depth?
Still, they love, unconditionally.

Every time the phone rings, she holds her breath,
prays there’s no bad news about Mother.
She knows it’s foolish to worry.
