Round and round child’s top spins until stripes tilt,
slanting up or down depending on view
in eyes of strangers once family members
now distortions in carnival mirror.

Divided like soldiers wear gray or blue,
rifles cock because no one remembers
when old bloodlines could never be severed
since oranges in orchard were always ripe.

Marked discontentment rips past calendar;
time offers no panacea or cure
for slate of mistakes refuse to be wiped
when siblings are rivals proclaim wrong due.

All crooked roads lead back to broken door
regardless of hubris or swollen lips
when there’s mutiny of ship’s former crew
forgets to honor mother and father.
