In group home, you’re an individual;
but to others, you are invisible
ghost they have transported to oblivion.
Caretaker bemoans his long five years,
proclaims he received no aid or recompense
despite the fact that oldest daughter flew in
to relieve, totaling three months annually.
How long did our mother take care of five
children, ailing husband with full-time job?
Has the single man learned not one lesson?
He has shipped drowning mother off on raft.
He’s emptied her accounts with hubris,
desecrated her home as though it were his.
In his madness, he has sought to control
old woman—defeated, shrunken to a pea.
He prays for Mother’s demise without pity.
He will never rise from ashes of city.
The hollow man rescinded promise.
Now, higher powers must speak for victim.
Who’d have thought end of life could begin war!
