What Lure?

Rochelle Lynn Holt

“This is just way station,” Marianne* said,
like a train or bus stop, I suppose,
although waiting time seems longer,

dependent on the age of the nose
imbibes strong sense of her Mother—
to be patient for the Garden of Dead.

What destroys you makes you stronger
even when prisoner’s strapped in hospice bed;
finally, you know when sons carry rose.

Though too late to correct mistakes; instead,
you are cognizant of other
as you listen to words mirror pose.

You know nothing could be wronger
than being pushed, maneuvered off toes,
needlessly fearing what souls ought not dread.

How unfortunate there was no close:
no apology from faces so red;
one wonders why the rush, what lure?

“This is just way station,” Marianne said
like a train or bus stop, I suppose
although waiting time seems longer.
