If the soul is the house of the body–
windows, blue-shuttered eyes, and roof, brown hair,
who moves in front door when broken limbs leave?

Are the bedrooms occupied by new dreams
belong to friends, heirs or passing strangers
sweep away ashes of unknown neighbors?

Is abode repaired, removed or transplanted
to another city or the country
where creeping vines crawl over shingled skin?

When a strong wind unhinges the screen door,
do ghosts of the future rattle old beams
so song can echo from throat of a corpse?

Some might believe that body houses soul;
but, this can’t be so when spirit has wings.
Why would a bird choose to be trapped in cage?

Flesh that shrivels and shrinks like burned wood
is smothered in ruins of clay or stone
as hovel not even homeless would crave.
