Maybe a part of our lives should belong
to our parents in last time of need
just as we were raised in their care,

protected nesting chickadees
under constant and watchful stare
until delicate bones and wings grew strong.

Reverse guardianship is rare
in such modern times blind to right or wrong
since there’s no land to inherit with deed.

Now, with cell phone in ear, we drive along
toll highways, barren of nature:
no farms or pine, no cat-tail reeds

for miles and miles cows used to share,
horses and chickens feeding on seed
as car windows are closed to church ding-dong.

Earth, mentors disappear without heed:
and, nobody misses whippoorwill song
since nobody misses clean air.

But, maybe part of our lives should belong
to our parents pushed away like weeds,
because one day we will be there!
