Winter Gesture

Rochelle Lynn Holt

Rain made her think about Mother & birth;
seasons and stages of life off screen;
turbulence of aging nature.

For centuries Earth has been demeaned
with that which was pure made impure:
resources removed for man to gain girth.

Obesity, greed have no cure
while forests are stripped whose green leaves gave mirth.
Old age is no less bucolic scene.

Only children deem birth of little worth,
removing parents like fish lure
to strange places they have never seen:

unsurety for those need sure,
usually in own familiar demesne.
What’s true is that which we love we will hurt.

If we saw ourselves in other with keen
emotional empathy and reason,
we’d know winter’s human gesture.
