Wreck of Hesperus

Our Mother now sleeps more than she’s awake,
wearing same pajamas for three days.
I comb her hair, clean spectacles.

She floats from bed to sofa in daze,
her shoulders hunched and her skin dull
while she pushes walker like broken rake.

Weary of lessons on earth’s school,
I hear her whispering as she prays.
“Please release me for my own and son’s sake.”

Even though house is familiar maze,
she could drown her self in blue pool like lake
but old spirit is stubborn bull.

Her poor spine is crooked and bruised knees ache
with no desire to push or pull.
She stares at TV with ghostly gaze.

After a bite of toast, she’s full
and no longer has taste for ribs or steak.
“Just put me out to pasture to graze.”

This is woman who used to sew and bake;
who laughed, crocheted, painted, read each day.
Wreck of Hesperus is without hull.
