Writing in Agony

Rochelle Lynn Holt

At home we can’t say good-bye as we creep,
struggle to move, jelly in quicksand.
We want to pick up phone, visit

Mother departed to higher land.
Memories of last weeks force us sit
and ponder her besieged body so limp....

She’s ball of yarn will never knit,
writhes in black agony before she sleeps.
My sister counts fast pulse; I clutch left hand.

We hope others who have sown will soon reap
since POA match was misfit.
We mourn future years when Mom might stand,

pushing walker in house, not pit.
But, caretaker couldn’t trust women,
especially when wading into the deep

fog as vulnerable, addicted weak man.
In many ways, we were oxen not sheep,
helping our lost mother to fit....
