Yoke of Waiting

Rochelle Lynn Holt

Sunday is the cruelest day like April
begs respite from pummeling winter
under the tight yoke of waiting.

One never intends to hurt Mother
in words waves drown after wading;
but, sometimes, pillows hold feathers with quills.

Can we breathe without berating,
knowing how to accept the breeze when still?
Thumbs in wrong places retrieve splinter.

It’s then body wants to fly over hill
because whether fleshes hating.
Why can’t brain just watch buds and leaves stir?

Season may be slow abating,
not patience of brothers and sister,
who expect wounds to heal with magic pill.

If this spring seems more wet and colder,
then perhaps that is just the year’s earth-will.
Useless to give weather rating!

Sunday is the cruelest day like April.
One never intends to hurt Mother
under the tight yoke of waiting.
