An Alarum at Dawn

I lay with the dead.
I play with the dead.
Because they understand
nothing.
But forgive
everything.
As if they were drops of light
momentarily weakening the darkness.
Or tinier.
Bits of frozen dust.
Shining.
But easily brushed away.
I try to harvest their strength.
I close my eyes.
I close my fists.
But still the only brush stroke
is me.
Broken.
And on my knees.
