Wondering Why

in the movies and on tv
you see them close the eyes of the dead
but those eyes won’t stay closed, you know
that’s why they put pennies over your eyes

in early america

when Katie died
her tongue even fell out of her mouth
and it wasn’t like she was sleeping
her eyes were still staring at us
giving us that vacuous stare
wondering why
